Michigan Department of Education Releases School Grades

January 10, 2024–

The Michigan Department of Education has released school grades for the 2022-2023 school year and Hartland Consolidated Schools has seven schools with the grade of A and a designation of a Reward School. Each year MDE ranks schools academically based on student proficiency. Schools in the top 5% of the Top-to-Bottom ranking are Reward Schools. To note, the 22-23 school year is the last year using the grading system that has been in place since 2018. Those results were sent directly to the school systems in December of 2023.

Hartland Superintendent, Chuck Hughes, was excited to share that Hartland schools continue to receive stellar grades. Hughes also said in his weekly update to parents, “This is outstanding news to report to the community. Thank you to the students, staff, and parents for your continued focus on working hard and supporting education.”

Grades for Proficiency:
Creekside Elementary A and Reward School
Lakes Elementary A and Reward School
Round Elementary A and Reward School
Village Elementary A and Reward School
Farms Intermediate A and Reward School
Middle School A and Reward School
Hartland High School A and Reward School
Hartland Virtual Academy and LEGACY Compliant and Met Academic Progress (MDE changed how it handles Alternative High School grading to these two highest ratings.)

As of May 2023, passed by the state legislature and signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, House Bill 4166 eliminates the grade system for public school rankings. The new Michigan school index system provides an overall score on a scale of 0 to 100 and separate ratings for student growth, proficiency and graduation. The system also grades each school numerically for English learner progress, attendance rates, post-secondary enrollment and staffing ratios.

“We feel the new system hits all the main categories the community is interested in, and thinks are important,” Hughes said. He listed student proficiency, student growth, attendance and graduation rates as key categories. To see those in effect, click the link below.
